Opuntia rubescens (syn. Consolea rubescens)

The ‘Road Kill’ cactus - comically known so due to its flat appearance and markings resembling tire tracks. This almost spineless cactus has a cylindrical trunk, with flattened branches, and it can grow to a mighty 6 metres tall, while its trunk can reach 20cm in diameter. As the plant ages you’ll notice a bark-like surface developing at the base of the trunk or around the arms, to help support the plant as it grows.

Watering

Water thoroughly and regularly when soil is 100% dry during the spring/summer months. Refrain from watering during the winter months.

Light requirements

Full sun

Feed

Use a cactus fertiliser 3 times between March - November.

Repotting

This species can live in the same pot for several years. Repotting may only be necessary once every 2-3 years (or longer), once roots begin to protrude out of the drainage holes. Use a well draining cactus compost, adding extra drainage medium such as perlite, pumice or grit.
