Cereus forbesii monstruosus

This teratological (or monstrous mutant) form of the Cereus forbesii has mutated to produce much more unpredictable growth. As the new growth ascends some of its ribs become compressed further up the stem, or produce irregular bumps that dramatically protrude out. Monstrous cactus forms may occur due to damage to the plant, changes in environment, or chemical build up in the soil. Their unstable nature typically puts them at a disadvantage in their natural habitats, but their rarity in horticulture makes them desirable collectibles amongst cactus enthusiasts.
