Cleistocactus winteri (Hildewintera aureispina)

If there is one plant we have to choose above all others, this may possibly be The One. As with many cactus species, the beauty of Cleistocactus winteri becomes more apparent with age. Commonly referred to as the Golden Rat Tail, the pendant stems of this sprawling succulent develop an almost fuzzy appearance that mature to be completely orange-gold at the base. The irregular, droopy appearance of this plant lends it a characterful form that is almost unrivalled, the exception perhaps being its hairier cousin, Cleistocactus colademononis.

Watering

In summer water thoroughly only when 100% of the soil has dried out. A/W allow soil to dry 100% - water sparingly (every two months). In spring gradually increase watering - depending on temp and light exposure.

Light requirements

Full sun.

Feed

Use a cactus fertiliser 2-3 times a year.

Repotting

Repotting is only necessary if and when the offsets have filled the pot, otherwise it can stay in the same pot for many years.
